Police have arrested an accused teacher  a video of an eight-year-old student being beaten up at a madrassa in Chittagong's Hathazari went viral. His name is Maulana Yahya. He is a teacher of Hafezi Madrasa named Markazul Islamic Academy in Hathazari Sadar. He was arrested from Sarafvata in Rangunia, his village home, on Wednesday evening. The teacher was expelled on Tuesday night.

Hathazari Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam told Prothom Alo this evening that his father had filed a case with the Hathazari Police Station alleging that the child had been tortured. Although they did not agree to sue at first, they were persuaded later. A madrassa teacher has been arrested in the case. He will be produced in court on Thursday and remanded by the police.

According to the source, the birthday of the child of Hefez department was yesterday. On this occasion, his parents came to the madrasa yesterday afternoon to see him. As soon as they left, the child left the madrasa. Then the teacher took the child inside the madrasa and beat him. As seen in the 33-second video, teacher Yahya grabbed the child by the neck and led him inside the madrasa. He later beat the child with a cane.

Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ruhul Amin visited the madrasa around 12pm last night after the video of the beating went viral. At the same time the parents of the child were also informed.

UNO Ruhul Amin told Prothom Alo that he went to the madrasa and talked to the victims, the accused teachers, the director of the madrasa and all concerned. The accused decided to expel the teacher immediately. He also instructed not to appoint him as a teacher in any madrasa in Hathazari.

UNO Ruhul Amin said he had requested the child's parents to file a case against the teacher. But the child's parents did not agree to sue.

UNO Ruhul Amin said, yesterday was the child's birthday. So the administration has given a birthday present to the child.
